At Pandora, you can put in an artist or song that you like and the site will create a playlist of artists/songs that share the same attributes of the song you entered.

It is a great way to discover new artists.Mike Didonnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09518353509591149503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10134184.post-1135259765630095172005-12-22T07:42:00.000-06:002005-12-22T07:56:05.643-06:00Commuter BehaviorI believe that sociologists could have a career studying the behavior of commuters and trying to explain their actions.

For instance, in the winter, when it is freezing outside, why do some people decide to go stand by the train tracks instead of waiting inside the station? Where I get on, there is no danger of not having a seat, which I might understand if that was the case. Although I would trade frostbite for standing up on the ride. Are they that worried that "their seat" will be taken if they are not earlier in line to board? And if so, so what? It is not like some seats are nicer than others; they are all cramped.

Also, it's not like it is a long walk from the station to the train. There is a bell in the station that signals an incoming train. So they would still have plenty of time to get to the boarding area if they left when the bell sounded. Apparently though that is not good enough and they need to be out there, braving the elements, like the idiot reporters they send out during storms to tell you to stay home if you don't need to go out.

So no matter what the weather, there they are standing out by the boarding platform waiting for the train. The commuter lookouts.Mike Didonnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09518353509591149503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10134184.post-1134051210166846912005-12-08T08:10:00.000-06:002005-12-08T08:13:30.190-06:00South Shore QuoteOverheard on the South Shore to Indiana:

"I have a big family and we're all devilled-egg eaters."

I was reading a book and hearing this made me pause. Can we please wait to find out a little bit more about the woman before we decide upon her qualifications for the Court?

I guess it is a good thing that these pundits have politics cause I am sure they wouldn't survive in the business world. Not in the political world where people feel the need to state their opinion instantaneously.

This whole process is just another example of Washington being cut-off from the people they represent.Mike Didonnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09518353509591149503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10134184.post-1127853166222700932005-09-27T17:31:00.000-05:002005-09-27T15:32:46.233-05:00I thought Tourist Season was overAs a commuter I understand that during the summer, the evening commute will have those folks who have made a day trip into the city. I realize that for the summer months I will have to hear things like:

Where's our stop?
Everyone stay together.
That Sears Tower is one tall building.
Did you wash your hand after tipping the bum?

I know that during this time I will have to put up with their loud conversations, since they seem to think that the seats absorb sounds and basically shout to each other over the roar of the train. Which by the way is electric, so there is no loud engine.

But I thought this was supposed to end after Labor Day. The other night a group of older folks were coming back from Chicago and proceeded to make the sound of nails on a chalkboard seem like sweet music compared to them.

There was one lady who seemed to want the entire car to know what her conversation was about. In addition to the "lovely" sound of her voice we were also treated to her cackling laugh, which made me keep looking up to see if she was stirring a boiling cauldron. She also kept daring someone in her group to do something, not just daring them but "double-dog" daring them. I swear if I ever use that phrase when I am in my fifties I will rip out my own tongue. Finally as she was leaving she made some comment about how luck her husband was since she was the only one who could/would put up with him. Yessir he is one lucky gent, my guess is he is being punished for sins in a previous life.

I hope that this was the last gasp of the summer tourists, sort of like a commuter indian summer.Mike Didonnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09518353509591149503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10134184.post-1126555946001401172005-09-12T17:12:00.000-05:002005-09-12T15:12:26.010-05:00After week one my fantasy team is in shamblesLike most sports geeks I am involved in a rotisserie league. This on is for football and for the most part it is very similar to fantasy football.

So all off-season I am debating on whether to keep Javon Walker, wide receiver Green Bay Packers. He was threatening a hold out and his relationship with his quarterback seemed to be on the rocks.

Keep or waive? Keep or waive? Keep or waive?

Well I bit the bullet and decided to keep him. And wouldn't you know it he tore his ACL and is out for the season.

Oh sure I guess I should feel sorry for him since he was injured and this could affect his career. And since he was going to be a free agent after this year he might have to settle for contract that is a little less obscene. But really this pales in comparison to the hurt this puts on my team and the fact that I need to replace his catches.

Fantasy football sure puts things in perspective.Mike Didonnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09518353509591149503noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10134184.post-1125325215159748142005-08-29T11:20:00.000-05:002005-08-29T09:20:15.170-05:00Welcome to SuburbiaIt's been a year since we moved from Chicago to Indiana and every once in a while I get hit wtih something that reminds me of just how different things are out here in the sticks.

This example comes from my recent weekend trip to Menards. As I was walking through there looking for a lightbulb I passed a promotion area near the front of the store. What were they promoting? Camouflage screens for hunting. I guess that hunters with their high-powered rifles and scopes don't have enough of an advantage over those sneaky deer.

I bet if they sold something similar in Chicago these screens would look like a dumpster or an abandoned car.Mike Didonnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09518353509591149503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10134184.post-1124905804777835192005-08-24T14:49:00.000-05:002005-08-24T12:50:04.783-05:00Equal opportunity for StupidityIt seems that both sides can blame their audience when issuing a non-apology. This time it is Pat Roberts who states that when he said the U. S. should assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez the AP misinterpreted him.

Come on. We have the video and it is very clear that he is calling for an assassination, even though he technically did not say it.

Again, just another example in our society where everyone is blameless and it is always the other guy's fault.Mike Didonnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09518353509591149503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10134184.post-1124459764604923692005-08-19T10:55:00.000-05:002005-08-19T08:56:04.626-05:00I'm sorry you're stupidWhat happened to real apologies? The latest version of the non-apology apology that you might be aware of is the one from NARAL. These are the folks that put up a very misleading ad about Supreme Court nominee John Roberts, which made him look like he supported abortion clinic bombings.

Well it came out that while the facts of the ad were correct, NARAL made a huge leap in their argument and that really their ad was false in its premise and NARAL came under pressure to remove their ad, which they did.

But did they apologize for playing fast and loose with the facts? No, not really. They apologized for the fact that the public "misunderstood" their ad. Look when you basically lie you bet people can misunderstand things. You should apologize for the lie, not for the fact that people did not see your lie for what it was. And let me add here that I am a supporter of a woman's right to choose.

This just points to the bigger issue that no apologizes for anything. They were misquoted or the audience did not understand what they meant. It is really insulting that people/organizations take no responsibility for their statements and try to shift the burden of understanding to the audience. When you lie, or make deceiving statements, it is your responsibility to take the heat and not try to shift the blame to your audience.

By the way, if you don't like this entry, you have misunderstood my point and I can't be responsible for that.Mike Didonnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09518353509591149503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10134184.post-1124214425591466262005-08-16T12:36:00.000-05:002005-08-16T12:47:05.600-05:00Thank God for the Traffic Aides - NotIn Chicago, I am not sure we cross the street without the helpful traffic aides.

If you walk through downtown you may have noticed them since they are usually by the curb instead of out directing traffic. Apparently they feel no need to get out there in the action, besides there are cars out in the street.

I am also amazed at how they sync their movements with the traffic lights. When the light is green they signal for the traffic to proceed and when it is red they signal for the cars to stop. I guess this is for all the drivers who are unfamiliar with the trafic signals that have been in place since God knows when.

And you have to love the style with which the efficiency with which they conduct their jobs. They don't waste their energy with unnecessary movements. Cars are waived forward by a simplistic circle of the wrist which seems to double for them as way to fan themselves. The stop instruction is given with all the emphasis of the royal wave to the masses.

I am glad that these outstanding public servants are on the city payroll. Maybe since we have them we can remove those unneeded traffic lights and save the city some money.Mike Didonnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09518353509591149503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10134184.post-1116872634004984212005-05-23T15:23:00.000-05:002005-05-23T13:23:54.010-05:00Death of the MiddleWhatever happened to fair and balanced discourse in this country and the objective to reach common ground?

It seems that more and more all we every see are the extremist positions of each issue. The various pundits come on (radio or tv) and basically say there is only one side to things and if you don't agree with them wholeheartedly you are wrong, un-american or both. The only side that matters is the one they are on. We never hear anyone concede valid arguments to the other side and seem to be letting the extremists move us to "absolute" positions with no middle ground.

What is wrong with admitting that each side has good points and that the merits of the arguments should be taken into account? Instead we seem to think that if we yell long enough and call them enough names, people will see "our" side of the story, persuasion through intimidation.

Also these absolutist positions obscure some of the valid arguments the pundits make. I have to admit that Rush Limbaugh does make some good points in his criticism of liberals and Democrats. Unfortunately he clouds his points with name-calling and his own extremist opinions.

I mention Rush Limbaugh because he is an extremely well know example. But let me make it clear that liberals are just as guilty in this as conservatives. I saw James Carville and Mary Matlin on "Meet the Press" and was equally disgusted by both.

As the airwaves become more cluttered with "left" and "right" views of things, there seems to be plenty or space in the middle. God forbid that you can see both sides of things.Mike Didonnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09518353509591149503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10134184.post-1113334335876708322005-04-12T16:29:00.000-05:002005-04-12T14:32:15.876-05:00On a rainy day you could lose an eyeWell it's a rainy day here in Chicago.

One of the main things I dislike about rainy days is umbrellas. I think everyone should be able to stay dry but every time it rains I almost lose an eye from someone with an umbrella. The people who use them seem to have no regard for anyone else. They plod along with their site line obscured in the usual herd mentality not worrying about who they may hit with their umbrella. There have been numerous times when I have to knock an umbrella away from my face in order to avoid an optical emergency. Then these people have the nerve to look at me as if I have done something wrong. Look just because it is raining does not give people license to do me harm so they can keep dry. I mean when you drive you still worry about the cars even though you have your wipers going.

Now some people pay attention and move their umbrellas and I really appreciate those folks. At least they realize they are not alone on the sidewalk. As for the rest of the folks who are oblivious to the potential harm they could do, I hope your umbrella frame gets bent.Mike Didonnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09518353509591149503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10134184.post-1111588924165848952005-03-23T10:41:00.000-06:002005-03-23T08:42:04.166-06:00The Lazy MediaI was watching my local news the other day and saw a story about college students on spring break. The story focused on binge drinking and how college students still drink excessively. This is news? Come on, this has been going since there was college, but every year the news folks drudge it up and try to pretend it is a "new" thing.

I saw a story the other night, that the Bush administration is creating "news" stories (whether this is right or not is a other story) and that local news stations are airing them unedited, as if they are actual news. Good grief Charlie Brown! Those news directors should be fired! Is the news now up for sale? If I have a piece on a subject I care about, then if I create a story on it and send it in, will the station air that as well? News is not for sale.

And finally, I do not want to hear the argument that the news media is simply giving the public what it wants. News is not about that, it's about telling the public what is should hear it, whether they like it or not. News should not pander to popular tastes.

It is because of things like this that I rarely watch my local news. I want to be informed when I watch the news and not feel like I have wasted my time.Mike Didonnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09518353509591149503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10134184.post-1110905377421511482005-03-15T12:49:00.000-06:002005-03-15T10:50:05.446-06:00The power of 'Free'I was walking to work today and Tropicana was giving away orange juice. What struck me was the fact that people were lined up to get their free juice. Lining up! I can see grabbing one as you go by but standing in line on a chilly morning for orange juice. It's not like you can't just run into a store, put down you two bucks and walk out with one.

It amazes me how people act when things are free. Things they wouldn't want to pay for, now become "must haves" when someone is giving them away. Things that people don't want, are now desirable if some struggling actor is handing them out on the street corner. I have seen people get things and then say "I won't use it, but you know it was free so I decided to take one." Look folks, free does not equal valuable. If you don't want something you should not grab it just because it is being given away.

Also people seem to lose their sense of self-restraint with these giveaways. When Dannon was giving away some of their smoothies people were grabbing four or five at a time. I wanted to tell these people that it was a pretty good bet that if they really wanted more, they could probably find a store that was carrying them. But I guess things just don't taste the same once you have to but them.Mike Didonnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09518353509591149503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10134184.post-1110415001361269432005-03-09T20:33:00.000-06:002005-03-09T18:36:41.360-06:00Been a whileI have not posted anything for a couple of weeks which is the result of two things:

1) I have been sick and have not felt like posting anything.

Something has been going around the Chicago area and I got it. I have fel bad for the last two weeks. Fortunately, I think I am on the downside of it.

2) There has not been anything happening that I have felt compelled to comment on.

Which may shock some folks.

I hope to get back to some regular postings, not that anyone is reading this anyway.Mike Didonnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09518353509591149503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10134184.post-1109337736585454182005-02-25T09:10:00.000-06:002005-02-25T07:22:47.246-06:00We know it's not a sportI just got my Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition a couple of days ago, I am a subscriber to SI. And I have to say that I have yet to go through the whole thing. To me the SI swimsuit edition is not a big deal and in fact is not even my favorite issue of SI. However one of my favorite issues will be coming out in a couple of weeks. I do not know what the cover story will be, but in the letters to the editor section there will be several letters about the swimsuit edition. These letters will range from:

Why do you have this issue, it's not about sports
This issue degrades women
This issue is pornographic

And at the end of some of these letters, these folks will cancel their subscription. I can't believe that SI still gets these letters; the swimsuit edition is over 25 years old. It's not like folks don't know it's coming every year, same bat time, same bat channel. And yet every year SI gets letters from "outraged" readers.

Here's an idea for those who don't like the swimsuit edition, throw it away when it comes. No one is forcing you to read it. If you did not like it before, chances are you are not going to like it the next time.

Why is it in our society today, do we feel that just because we do not like something that means that it should be stopped? We like to spout off about freedom in this country so go ahead and exercise your freedom of choice. Turn the channel, change the station or throw the edition away. No one is forcing you to read it. So go ahead and give your constitutional rights a workout, or contact me and I will let you know how to forward me your swimsuit edition.Mike Didonnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09518353509591149503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10134184.post-1108386849709417532005-02-14T07:01:00.000-06:002005-02-14T07:14:09.710-06:00Every Second CountsOne thing I have noticed at my company over some time is the way the people can't seem to wait to get the elevator doors to close. As soon as the last person is on the elevator someone hits the "close door" button. It is the same whenever someone gets off, whoever is still on practically leaps to close the door. A couple of times I have had someone almost close the doors on me as I was getting off. Apparently my exit was not speedy enough.

I am not sure why most folks feel that they can't afford to lose that extra second waiting for the doors to close automatically. Especially since "a sense of urgency" does not seem to be woven into our corporate culture. Maybe it is because there is a button that gives folks the power to make a decision on their own and so by using this power it makes them feel somewhat better about themselves.

Whatever the reason I find it somewhat rude and annoying. Really is that extra second really gonna matter? I find it hard to believe people will think 'I could have gotten more done if only I hadn't waster so much time waiting for the elevator door to close.'Mike Didonnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09518353509591149503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10134184.post-1107886111876368142005-02-08T12:08:00.000-06:002005-02-08T12:08:31.876-06:00Suing from the GraveI am sure that this may be a touchy subject but it seems to me that every time something bad happens we feel the need to sue.

Chicago Tribune | Family of boy killed by train sues Metra

Not let me just say that:
This was atragedy
I have not had a loved one killed in any remotely similar manner
I am sure that the parents would rather have their child back

Given this though, I am not sure what the point of the suit is. The people were fired, they paid a price for their actions. Now I am not sure if criminal charges were filed but even if there weren't, why sue? Is it to send a message? If so then I am missing what that message is. Is it to further punish those involved? Maybe at least a little bit. I don't want to seem callous, but I can't really see what is to be gained from this suit.Mike Didonnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09518353509591149503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10134184.post-1107438094052762312005-02-03T07:25:00.000-06:002005-02-08T08:54:32.036-06:00Ain't talking 'bout love Well I just read that Meredith Phillips and Ian McKee have split up. Who are they? They were America's cutest couple from the second season of the bachelorette. Am I happy they broke up? Well I could not care less really except for one thing, after the show they had no problem going on every talk show and appearing in every "People" type magazine professing their undying love for each other and how this was the real deal. So I guess it wasn't so real after all. Maybe they realized that the circumstance under which they met were slightly unusual and that when the cameras turned off they had to adjust to being together and dealing with real relationship issues, which are never easy.

I love that celebrities, in this case pseudo-celebrities, go to the press and tell every one how mush they are in love, that this is the real thing and that they are soul mates. Then two weeks/two months later they have broken up, but are still good friends. Hey how about you just shut up. Relationships are hard things to keep going and many times it seems easier to walk away than go back and try to work things out. I mean, I know the giddiness at the start of a relationship seems like it will last forever, but just because you got along great on the set or at the post Oscar bash, doesn't mean that your new crush is the love of your life.

In case you are not familiar with it, it is about a bouncer who comes in to a small town and while helping clean up a bar, saves the town from the big bully who controls it and finds romance with the local doctor, who also happens to be the big billy's ex-girlfriend.

This movie is cheesey on so many levels. I mean it stars Patrick Swayze which qualifies it right there. But I love the fact that his character is a some zen master bouncer, who is famous in the world of bouncers, and makes fabulous money because he can tame the wildest environments. Maybe he makes so much money 'cause he calls himself a 'cooler' rather than a bouncer. What the difference is I have no idea, except it seems that the cooler is on a higher level than a regular bouncer, sort of like levels of karate. I guess a bouncer with enough work and self-determination could move himself up to cooler status, but I have no idea what those standards are and if there is some kind of official notification that one is now a cooler. Maybe there is some cooler school they attend.

I also love that as the bar owner tries to establish himself against the bully there is a fight in the bar every night. It's almost like Ground Hog Day where the same thing happens every night. And no matter how many things get broken or how much mayhem is created, the next night the bar is back in perfect condition.

Finally, beside my boy Swayze there are a number of other B stars. Sam Elliot, Ben Gazarra, Kelly Lynch and one of the guys from the 70's show "Emergency" which I used to watch religiously as a kid.

I know it is a bad movie, but whenever I am channel surfing and I find it on I can't help but watch it.

In my walk to my job I am usually going against the majority of the flow of pedestrian traffic and everyday it is like swimming against the tide. People coming at me, 3-4 abreast taking over the sidewalk making me serve to avoid them. I am just in my little lane on the right side of the sidewalk, which I thought was how you were supposed to do it, I am in danged or being overrun by the human tide of commuters. Moist expect me to mover over even more so they can get through. And God forbid if I don't turn my shoulders to let them through, never mind that they are taking up 3/4 of the sidewalk. All I want is my little lane! I feel ike Billy Crystal in the stampeded scene from City Slickers, where he is holding on to the tree for dear life. The one benefit to this situation is that I have increased my skills in moving through a crowd which comes in handy whenever I go to a Cubs game.

This morning I was awoken by my daughter because she had a bad dream and wanted me to sit with her so she could go back to sleep. The only problem with this today was she woke me up about 10 minutes before my alarm was scheduled to go off. Now you might say that it should have been no big deal as I had to get up soon anyway but I was fighting to get those 10 more minutes, expecially since it was a Monday morning. I kind of feel cheated out my full sleep, and do not see it as a good omen for the rest of the week.

It wasn't that she was talking as I tried to sleep but more an amazement that she felt the need to call someone so early.

What in the world do you need to talk about at 6:30 in the morning? I mean if you are calling your spouse to tell them to pick up some milk on the way home isn't that a message you can give them at any point during the day? I can understand if it is urgent, like you have to come home right now our house is on fire. But really, can't casual conversations wait till later?

That brings me to another point, why do we feel it is okay to call someone on a cell at a ridiculously early hour, when pre-cell phone we would wait until a more respectable hour? Just because I can call someone whenever I want, doesn't mean I should.
